THE FIRST COINS ISSUED IN THE PEREGRINE CITY OF ANCHIALOS

Abstract:
The first emissions of Anchialos’ mint are the so-called “pseudo-autonomous” coins. The analysis of these emissions revealed that Anchialos’ coinage began with coins of two nominal values – first and second, each with two reverse types. Of the twelve reverse dyes analyzed, not only is none the same as, but none comes even close to the reverse dyes of later emissions with the same iconography. The earliest emissions of Anchialos’ mint with their specific style and iconography represent a separate group of coins which can be referred to as early city or pre-imperial emissions. All the peregrine cities in the province of Thrace, including Anchialos, begin their coinage with the so-called “pseudo-autonomous” coins, but soon after this initial stage in their coinage, the issuance of these coins ceases and is succeeded by coins whose reverse dyes bear the image of the ruling emperor or a member of his family.
